Sure, maybe the kid was embarrassed. Did the Mom ever stop to think that maybe his humiliation would stop him from acting out in class?
This may not have been the best way to deal with the situation, but I am so tired of kids acting out and no real discipline as a result.

This is why people are sooo messed up today. As children, they were taught that they could do no wrong. Now as adults, they can't understand why they aren't receiving gold medals for waking up in the morning.
